Introducing Tinkka forthcoming album's producer Phil Pendlebury, one of Riffs&Rays
team well known in Yorkshire as producer, performer, musician and songwriter.
- Which 5 words would describe you best?
- That's tricky: Modest, Humorous, Moody, Careful, Musical, Explorer (oops
that's 6) :-)
- You were a fan of T-Rex. What's your opinion on Mickey Finn's T-Rex from
Yorkshire, ever seen them?
- Marc Bolan & T.Rex were the first band I ever listened to as a kid. No one
pointed me at them I just picked up Telegram Sam and thought... "Wow! This great!
What a voice and great rhythms." I haven't seen the Yorkshire
version but the keyboard player has co written one or two of the Tinkka tracks...
Coincidence!
- Most people say: either be a producer or performer, how do you manage to do
both?
- Like many people (especially musicians) I get very quickly bored doing the
same thing all the time. Producing dance music with Riffs & Rays, rock stuff for
Tinkka and for myself (rock is where my heart is) and I still love
having an audience too. All those things help stop the boredom setting in.
- What's 'good music' for you - is it some one style, etc?
- Not really one style at all. For example; on the way to my gigs I usually
listen to AC/DC or Status Quo in the car. On the way home it would be Steely
Dan.
- Have any 'rituals' going to studio?
- Yes.. Coffee, Nicotine... as much as possible (Yuk I know)!
- About your musical influences, please.
- Influences are very varied. Steely Dan, The Tubes, Quo, Scritti Politti. I
think one of my strong points is my versatility. This is because of my love of
many kinds of music AND my ability to play it all myself too. Hehe.
- If you knew in advance some band won't be successful, would you still work
for them or refuse?
- I would try my best to MAKE them succesful.
- Is Yorkshire music scene rather alive or dead at the moment?
- Hmm that's tricky. Can't really answer that properly. There are loads of bands
around that's for sure. Whether any of them are serious or commited enough to
get out of the garage is another question.
- About your work with Tinkka, please.
- When they asked me to produce they knew what I had been through and my history
with rock music AND with chart and dance floor music. So I knew that I could put
a lot of myself into it and the result would fit the requirements. Basically I
got the rough demos every few weeks. I sat and thought how I envisioned the
songs to sound. Then began laying down the music. Some of the demos were already
quite good but not the correct angle (for me at least). Some were no more than a
singer and an acoustic guitar. Getting Soraya's vocals is always a pleasure. She
has a very strong voice but can sing with subtlety too. Soraya's husband Jason
was great help and in fact he recorded a lot of the vocals for me while I was
working on music.
